Demonstration design by Newel · Grain & Joint is not a real joinery workshop

Somerset

Furniture and fitted work, made by hand in one workshop.

A two bench workshop making fitted kitchens, libraries, staircases and shopfronts in solid timber. Everything is drawn, made and fitted by the same two people.

From the bench

Four commissions, and the timber each one asked for.

Curved timber ceiling

Curved ceiling in ash

Private house, Bath

Ninety two ribs, each one different, set out full size on the workshop floor before a single one was cut.

Green panelled dining room

Panelled dining room

Farmhouse, Wells

Panelling and a ten seat table in one timber, scribed to a room with no square corner.

A wishbone chair

Chairs in steamed oak

Commission, six

Steam bent backs, cut from one board so the six match. Two weeks a chair, which is why we make them in runs.

Timber lined bedroom

Bedroom lining and joinery

Coastal house, Devon

Wall lining, wardrobes and a window seat, all in one timber so the room reads as a single piece.

What we make

Four kinds of work, and one way of working.

Fitted kitchens

Drawn around the room you have rather than a carcass system. Solid timber doors and frames, painted or oiled.

Libraries and studies

Shelving, panelling and desks, scribed to walls that are never straight in a house worth panelling.

Staircases

Cut, assembled and dry fitted at the bench, then taken apart and refitted on site in a day.

Shopfronts

Traditional shopfronts and signwriting boards, including work in conservation areas.

The workshop

Two people, one building, no subcontractors.

We opened the workshop in 1998 and it has been the two of us since. Everything is drawn, cut, assembled and fitted by the people you meet, which is slow and is the whole point.

We keep eleven timbers in stock and season most of them ourselves. If a job wants something we do not have, we will say how long it takes rather than substitute.

Commission

Tell us about the room.

Rough dimensions and a photograph of the space is enough to start. We will say what it would take and roughly what it would cost before you commit to a drawing.
